A Review of the Top Blog Advertising Sites
Posted June 21st, 2007 by Brian Gilley Unless you've been living under a rock for the last year, you already know about blog review web sites. In this post I'll list some of the top contextual blog advertising companies with a brief description of what you get from each service. The attraction of blog review web sites from the perspective of a web site owner is contextual one-way links from blogs. You can buy a contextual one-way link to your site starting at around $10 per review from a few of these services, such as the one from Blogsvertise.com. Let us know if we missed a site that should fit in this list. We'll continue to add to this list of blog advertising sites, so bookmark it for future updates. Thanks to Alex (from Merkados Interactive Marketing ) for help with this list.
Blogsvertise.com
Blogsvertise.com offers webmasters lots of blog categories to choose from such as travel, web design, and health among others. Blog reviews ordered are fairly easy to control, i.e. it's fairly easy to pick and choose from relevant blogs to review your site versus blogs that may be way off-topic. Advanced controls offer sorting by PageRank, Alexa score, and even number of Yahoo back links! Decent ranked blog reviews start at around $10 each. Good ones run upwards of $20 or more though.
Payperpost.com Blog Reviews
Payperpost.com is the most popular of the blog review web sites online, with a huge network of bloggers who are part of their network. A good quality blog reviews from Payperpost.com will set you back around $30 or more. You don't have any real control to first review the web sites that will review your web site. But they do allow a few goof sorting methods for choosing bloggers and (hopefully) eliminating most junk blogs from writing a review. Other sorting includes industry niche, Alexa score, and PageRank. You can also exclude those free hosted blog platforms like Myspace.com and blogspot.com (which have little to no value in many cases).
ReviewMe.com
ReviewMe.com is perhaps one of the more pricey blog review sites out there. Some reviews can run upwards of $2,500 each - not bad for a 300-500 word write up, heh Shoemoney? Typically, you could expect to pay around $40-80 for a web site review though. ReviewMe lets you search by tag, starred ranking system (their own 1 to 5 star system for ranking the quality of the blog), and price. The effectiveness of ReviewMe blog reviews we;ve purchased would receive 4 out of 5 stars for overall quality. We'd recommend a manual review of each blog you'd consider relevant in the search engines before buying. Determining which one gives the most value is the key picking the right blogger to review your site in ReviewMe.
SponsoredReviews.com
SponsoredReviews.com is much like ReviewMe.com and allows for advertisers to search by "Total Rank," a score SponsoredReviews.com gives based on several measurements such as PageRank and Alexa score. Other features include a low 35% transaction fee, meaning the blogger gets 65% of the total, so on a $150 blog review the blogger would get $98! This is the lowest transaction fee versus other competitor in the contextual advertising marketplace. Their Hybrid system is also the only one that allows both advertisers and bloggers to search for each other. Their bidding system also allows bloggers and advertisers to negotiate pricing.
Smorty.com
Reviews written from Smorty.com bloggers must have a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of about 400 words. Bloggers get paid for the reviews approved by advertisers. The interface for advertisers is really simple to use. All of the available writing opportunities are listed on the panel for you to accept/decline. Something which I found lacking at Smorty was the lack of RSS feeds in the system. From experience with other blog review sites it would be easier for bloggers to keep track of available opportunities via RSS feeds. Many similar services have integrated RSS feeds and this system works well for bloggers. Additional Notes: Payment through Paypal, weekly payments for bloggers, and no minimum payout!
B5media.com
B5media.com seems to be a little more off the beaten path and not really formatted like the other blog review sites listed so far. We have not used b5media yet, so cannot comment on exact pricing or their interface. Their blog network seems to be limited at 200 or so blogs total, but worth inquiring about if you are looking to expand from the more well known sites above.
Reviewback.com
Reviewback.com is a slightly different approach for bloggers. You can find bloggers that are interested in the same topics and subjects that you are. Using their search features, you can contact and organize reviews with fellow bloggers and copywriters. Registering is free, but I would watch for reciprocation of links. Contextual reciprocation isn't necessarily a bad thing unless done in large numbers between blogs. If mixed well enough within posts and categories, it shouldn't be much of a problem though.
Blogitive.com
We've used Blogitive.com for several clients over the past few months. The return and pricing was pretty good. Here are some things to consider. The post must have at least 100 words. There must be at least two posts between each sponsored post and these posts must have at least 50 words. Each link will be on it’s own page, with no more than three other links on that page - Each Blog post is usually stored on a unique permanent URL from the rest of the posts of that particular month. Last, each link will be left up indefinitely, guaranteed for up to 1 year.
PayU2Blog.com
PayU2Blog pays you a flat rate of $5.00 per completed assignment regardless of your blog’s PR or traffic level. Payments are made every 2 weeks via Paypal and bloggers cannot express a negative opinion regarding the advertiser’s product. From reading reviews of other blog review sites online, PayU2Blog doesn't really provide much information for bloggers or advertisers. It looks like the payout to bloggers along with inefficiencies of their process might be playing a role in their lack of followers.
Bloggerwave.com
A fairly new contender, Bloggerwave.com looks to have some catching up to do in comparison to Blogsvertise.com or Payperpost.com. Several other blogs have mentioned making $10 with minimum 50 words in their post from Bloggerwave.com. That's a quick 10 bucks! We have not tried this service out but will test it over the next week, so we'll update on the ease of use and quality of their blogs and interface. Perhaps in the meantime someone over at Bloggerwave will see this and at least update their homepage title tag to something other than "Bloggerwave Default(Home)" - not very descriptive or useful if you ask me...
Weblogsinc.com
Perhaps we should've moved Weblogsinc.com up on the list but since this service will likely only cater to those with deep pockets, we decided it doesn't necessarily fit into the same mold as several of the mainstream paid blog review sites. Several of the popular blogs within the Weblogsinc.com network are Engadget, Autoblog, and Joystiq. In order to receive pricing you have to contact a guy named Steve so that he can "tailor a solution that best meets your needs."
InBlogAds.com
If it's monthly recurring fees you're into and a relatively small and oblivious network of sites to choose from, then InBlogAds.com might be for you! I'm not sure why a web site offering contextual links would charge monthly for them when so many of their competitors are offering the one-time fee. Their network of sites seems tiny, at less than around 75 sites in their whole network. My advice to InBlogAds owner(s) would be to change over to a new flat-fee business model like their competitors and use another platform. Theirs was definitely free of useful features.- When bloggers think of online advertising, the words Google AdSense immediately pops to mind. Google had done an amazing job capturing the internet advertising market with the AdSense product. However, Google is not the only game in town. As a webmaster, it is your duty to seek out other ways to monetize your site. As we all know, putting all your eggs in one basket isn’t the smartest thing to do. Yet I have come across countless blogs with no other means of monetization other than AdSense. Even my own blog was running just Google until a few days ago.
*Disclosure notice – Many of the advertising vendors listed offers affiliate programs, where the affiliate will get a cut of the income earned by the site referred. I have decided NOT to place any affiliates links on this list. Why? Because I am just too lazy to sign up for the affiliate programs. I’ll probably be kicking myself later for not doing this.

- Here we list companies that offer this marketing solution to webmasters. Google Adsense is often considered the prime choice, but they do have restrictions and some people may be refused to their program, so many are looking for Google Adsense alternatives:

From Gregory Go, former About.com GuideSee More About:Profiles of 60+ advertising networks and affiliate programs that you can use to make money with your website.Common acronyms of online advertising:
- CPM - cost is calculated by impression. You are paid when an ad is shown.
- CPC - cost of ads are calculated based on number of clicks. You are paid when someone clicks on an ad.
- CPA - cost per action. You are paid when the visitor does something -- for example, filling out a form or buying a product.
24/7 Real Media
24/7 Real Media offers standard graphic ad units with CPM and CPC campaigns. The account managers are really responsive, but their interface is horrible. Going through the advertisers and checking your earnings is a really convoluted and slow process.ad pepper
Ad pepper can provide exclusive or non-exclusive representation for your ad inventory. They offer many types of CPM ads including graphic, contextual, and integrated text links.AdBrite
AdBrite offers CPC, CPA, and CPM in a variety of formats including text ads, inline ads, banners, video, full page ads, ads in photos. You can set your own price and run ads from another ad network if AdBrite can't supply an advertiser at your asking price.AdDynamyx
AdDynamyx offers CPM and CPC graphic ads featuring Fortune 500 Advertisers. They serve standard ad units as well as various types of pop unders and floating ads.AdEngage
AdEngage shows targeted text ads (they now have PhoText Ads which includes a small image with the text). They sell ads as a weekly sponsorship package with your ad space priced by week. You set your own rate, but advertisers can see your stats, so they can evaluate your cost per click anyway. If your inventory isn't purchased, CPC ads are displayed.Adfish
Adfish is a small affiliate network and only offers CPA ads. They don't have an overwhelming number of advertisers, so it's a good place for a beginner to learn the ropes of affiliate marketing.adknowledge
adknowledge offers targeted CPC graphic and text ads, as well as email and search campaigns. They use behavioral targeting to serve the most relevant ads, and boast having over 50,000 advertisers vying for your ad space.AdOn Network
AdOn Network offers CPM (they call it CPV--cost per view--for some reason) text and graphic ads. You can't sign up online--you will need to shoot them an email and a representative will contact you.ADSDAQ
ADSDAQ runs text and graphical CPM ads and allows you to set your CPM rate. They also use performance stats to serve the highest performing ads first, which benefits both the advertiser and publisher.Adsmart
Adsmart serves the U.S. and U.K. extensively, requiring a minimum of either 70% USA traffic or 70% UK traffic, and 100,000 monthly page views. They offer CPM and CPC campaigns and pays out 55% of net sales revenue.
adsonar
adsonar claims to "raise the relevancy bar" by delivery content-targeted ads better than other networks. Advertisers bid for placement and run if it meets your minimum bid requirement.Adtegrity
Adtegrity does not accept ads that do not meet their ad quality standards, such as Adult material, excessively flash ads, or "ads simply in bad taste." They also don't run PSA's or default ads that has no revenue potential. They offer CPM and CPC ads and guarantee 100% sellout of your inventory. They require 500,000 page views/month and 50% USA traffic.AdToll
AdToll allows you to set your own price and pays 75% commission. They offer CPM and CPC ads in all the standard ad units, including Video Ads as well as a new ad unit called a Peel Away Ad where an ad is hidden under your page and is activated upon a mouseover by a user.Advertising.com
Advertising.com claims to be the largest online advertising network. They offer rev-share, CPA, and CPM pricing options that you can set the minimum for. You need a healthy two million impressions per month to join (their affiliate program does not have a minimum traffic requirement).Amazon Associates
Amazon Associates is one of the most popular affiliate programs because it is easy to sign up and implement. Burst Media has two different programs in their network. Burst Network focuses on Target Advertising sold on a CPM basis. Non-targeted Advertising campaigns are sold at lower CPMs and include CPC ads to fill up inventory. They keep 50% of the ad revenue but offer better rates for publishers who agree to one year or three years exclusivity. Burst Direct is the other program they offer that run performance-driven campaigns. They take a much smaller cut (35%), but the revenue potential is probably more uncertain.Chitika
Chitika offers one-of-a-kind ad products that provides powerful and integrated promotions. They are all CPA ads for products, so is a good network to use if your site is related to shopping or has a good tie in with products. Chitika offers a wide variety of categories and ad units to choose from, so you have more control over the type of products to feature instead of depending on keywords to be picked up by their ad server.ClickBank

You can tap in to all of these ad networks at the same time and get the highest rate among them.FeedBurner
FeedBurner is a popular network that offers advertising for your feed as well as your site. Their site ads include Google Adsense to get the most inventory fill for your space. Even though FeedBurner does not have a minimum feed count to serve ads, advertisers are unlikely to purchase feeds with low numbers.Flux Advertising
Flux Advertising is an affiliate network running performance based ads. An account manager will be assigned to you to help guide you to the promotions and offers best suited for your site. This is optimal for those who need more personal attention to get started. They also offer a bonus rewards program where you can claim prizes based on your earnings.Google Adsense
Google Adsense is the most popular and widely used contextual advertising network. They serve CPC ads (image or text) based on the content on your page. Advertisers bid on keywords so the CPC rate varies from one ad to another.HerAgency
HerAgency does not work like a typical ad network where ads are dispersed to hundreds of sites at any given time with little discretion. They make buys and create campaigns for sites individually as well as a package of quality women-oriented sites. Their cut ranges from 35-50%, depending on your site's traffic, and the requirement to join is 200,000 monthly page views (and of course, a primarily female audience).IndustryBrains
IndustryBrains serves CPC contextual text and graphical ads with rates determined by bids advertisers place for specific categories. Unsold inventory can be used for rich media graphical ads that are paid when users view an ad (the ads are interactive).Kitara Media
Kitara Media represent quality sites, securing high CPM rates for your ad inventory. They will also provide guidance in implementing traffic strategies and revenue solutions.Kontera

They also offer services for publishers to drive traffic, such as directory listings and press release submissions.MaxBounty
MaxBounty is an affiliate network promoting an "open advertising network" which allows affiliates direct communication with the merchants.MIVA
MIVA exclusively serves CPC targeted text and inline text ads. You can select keywords that trigger ads when their contextual matching technology does not find an ad to serve that matches your content.OrangeFeed
OrangeFeed provides ads for your feed including several ad formats not available on other feed advertising networks. Not only can you display a text ad at the bottom of your items, you can also have inline ads (max 1 link per article) as well as headline ads.Pepperjam Network
Pepperjam Network provides publishers with an ad widget which allows customized contextual ads from one or multiple advertisers at the same time. You can mix ads from any merchant partner to make the most out of your ad space.Pheedo

Rydium runs content-relevant ads, offering a variety of creatives and targeting features. They require a minimum of 1 million page views per month.Scratch//Back
Scratch//Back is an innovative system that allows users to "tip" you and in return you "give back" links or images. Users who tip are allowed to display a text link or image with a custom message on mouseover. You can set your own rates and listing preferences and remove any listing with no refund to the tipper.Text-Link-Ads
Text-Link-Ads sell text links on your pages. You allocate a space on your page for their links, submit which pages you want to sell on, and they'll put your space in their marketplace. They take 50% of the revenue and rates are based on your Google PageRank, which has to do with how many sites link to your page. The more popular the page (based on links), the higher the rate for an ad on the page. Text-Link-Ads also offer paid text links in your feeds via the Feedvertising option. You can use the space to sell text links through Text-Link-Ads (the same way they sell text links for your site) or put your own ads in there. The Feedvertising option is only available to WordPress users.Mirago
Mirago is a leading network in Europe, so if you have a lot of European traffic, they can monetize your inventory with content-targeted links.Vizi Direct
Vizi Direct offers 100% fill rate (including international traffic) with no default or house ads and runs only impression based campaigns.0

“How do I make money online?”
Well, to start, go read some articles on the Internet with that phrase in the title. After you recover from the initial bout of soul crushing depression come back here and let me introduce you to the staple of most web publishing based monetization — advertising. The most important thing you can learn about advertising online is that it’s a much richer landscape than Adsense would have you believe. To drive that point home I’ve collected 21 advertising providers covering the gamut of publishing formats.
1. Kontera – In-Text Advertising
Kontera is a good network if you are just starting out as a publisher or if your content is text heavy. You can get into the network through Scribefire or sign up directly, and the code is simple to install. The downside is you will have a ton of double underlined ads at random locations in your text. For some readers it can be a nuisance. This is a great network while you are still at the “I want to pay the server bill” stage.
2. Text Link Ads – Text Link / In-Text Advertising
This network deals in paid text links which typically find their home in your sidebar. There is a lot of upside to Text Link Ads. You don’t need gaudy banners, they pay well and they are generally transparent to your audience. Unfortunately, they are on rather shaky ground Google and using TLA can get you penalized in the engines. For most small publishers this won’t be a significant issue, but if strong positioning in the SERP is absolutely critical for your business, this should be a consideration.
3. Commission Junction – CPA / Affiliate Marketpace
Commission Junction deals in cost per action and affiliate programs. If you run a site that reviews products or otherwise encourages buying behavior, this network can be extremely lucrative. Typically the payouts per action are substantially higher than cost per impression or cost per click networks, unfortunately if your site does not convert viewers into buyers you won’t see a dime. There are tons of affiliate networks out there, commission junction is one of the largest and most well known.
4. Shopping Ads – CPA / Affiliate Marketplace
Think commission junction but with deals through eBay, Amazon and other retail channels. Again, before using this as your primary monetization channel consider your audience. If I am using your site as a pitstop to a purchase, affiliates are a great way to get cut — if, however, your site gives me no incentive to buy anything, don’t expect to see a huge payout from Shopping Ads.
5. Adsense – Contextual Ad Network
The most recognizable ad network on the web, Google’s contextual ads make up a huge percentage of online advertising. The reason is that they are one size fits all, no matter what your site Google probably has an ad for you. Not only that, their fill rate is superb and they are an easy network to get into. What’s the downside? It’s easy to outgrow them, you will eventually find that Google’s payout for many verticals isn’t as good as you could be making elsewhere. At that point, it might be time to start looking at other providers and using Google as a remnant to fill your unsold inventory.
6. Technorati Media – Rep Agency
This is one of the ad providers we use here at HTSAA. Technorati Media has a fantastic sales and support staff and CPMs I have only seen rivaled by Gorilla Nation and Federated Media. They payout at 50% and they currently sell skyscrapers, leaderboards and rectangles. The downside is that they are difficult to get into (they currently work with about 100 publishers) and because they are new, they have a limited number of campaigns available. If you have a few other providers for your unsold inventory, I can’t say better things about Technorati.
7. Tribal Fusion – Rep Agency
Like Technorati Media, Tribal Fusion is a rep agency so you will have a sales staff behind you trying to sell advertising into your vertical. The result is very competitive CPMs and a fill rate that comes from being behind an established network. Unfortunately, getting into Tribal Fusion isn’t easy. Bad economic times are also causing them to decrease the number of publishers they let in, which will be especially difficult for smaller publishers who might have been just large enough to get in under other conditions.
8. Federated Media – Rep Agency
While I have never worked with Federated Media personally, I will say that they are a premiere agency for top-tier bloggers. They have some of the highest CPMs in the industry and they have a sales staff that is constantly working to drive new, innovative campaigns to their publishers. You will need substantial traction to have a chance to be accepted by Federated Media, but once you get a few hundred thousand monthly impressions it’s worth sending in an application.
9. Gorilla Nation – Rep Agency
Gorilla Nation is another network I haven’t worked with directly, but it has the reputation as one of the best ad providers for medium to large publishers. Like all rep agencies your biggest problem will be fill, they can’t provide hard numbers (since they are different depending on the publisher) but expect to see a 30% fill rate.
10. Forbes Business Network – Rep Agency
Forbes Business Network is specialty ad network for business and finance blogs run by the salespeople at Forbes. I have had a love hate relationship with FBN. They are a great provider of premium advertising, seeing $5 CPMs in some cases. Unfortunately, depending on the month the number of campaigns and their fill rate can be extremely low (under 10%). Forbes is a great addition to the chain, but it is unlikely to be your only ad provider.
11. Performacing Ads – 125 x 125 Marketplace
Performancing is in the business of selling 125 x 125 ads now. For anyone who has spent time in content production, you would know that the 125 x 125 is a hugely popular format for bloggers. Performancing has been a mixed bag, their interface is great and implementation of the code is easy but you still spend a great deal of time waiting for your ad space to be sold. It’s good but not a perfect solution.
12. Voxant – In-Video
Voxant is a provider of video content syndicated from dozens of major news companies including BBC, AP and Reuters. They also have a revenue sharing program that pays publishers for showing their videos. This is a win-win. Not only do you get access to high quality video content, but you also get paid whenever anyone watches it. The only downside is the backend. It’s difficult to track anything and hard to tell whether every view is a paid impression (they use several ad providers and sometimes none at all). All in all it is a great service that has only been getting better over time.
13. Videoegg – Social Network / Widget Advertising
Videoegg has a large inventory of ads for wdigets, social networks and other rich media platforms. It’s a great network for anyone with a traditionally difficult to monetize platform.
14. Social Spark – Advertorial
Social Spark allows advertisers to buy bloggers time and space and get them to write about products and services — that’s right, it’s an advertorial exchange. This is another buyer beware scenario, not because Google will frown on you (the IZEA team worked hard to unruffle those feathers) but because the advertorial model is still young in Blogging circles and there is a lot of backlash associated with using it. Transparency seems to be the biggest takeaway when using a service like this, Social Spark forces it but even without the nudge in the right direction be sure to realize you are playing with your reader’s trust. That being said, I think everyone would do well to realize that advertorial has been in media since the invention of the newstand, it might be time for us to get over ourselves just a little.
15. Review Me – Advertorial
ReviewMe is another Advertorial marketplace with a few less checks and balances as Social Spark. The same rules apply.
16. interClick – Ad Network
While I would have liked a higher fill rate, what I like about interClick is your ability to see just about everything about the campaigns that you are running. They offer skyscrapers, leaderboards and rectangles as well as popup ads (if you’re into that sort of thing). This network should definitely be used
17. Casale Media – Ad Network
Casale Media is a notoriously difficult network to get into, but everything I’ve heard suggest that they run into fewer dilution problems than similar networks.
18. Pheedo – RSS Advertising
When you absolutely, positively must have advertising in every portion of your digital life Pheedo is here to help you place ads in your RSS feeds. Everyone loves getting feed subscribers but they hate the fact that their most valuable readers almost never see their shiny new brand advertisement. I don’t put ads in my feed but I’ve heard that Pheedo is a good (if not particularly lucrative) solution.
19. Magpie – Twitter Advertising
See Ophelia’s excellent post on the matter, coming tomorrow.
20. Pubmatic – Ad Optimizer
Pubmatic isn’t really an ad provider, but it will help you make money. Pubmatic acts as an advertising optimizer, you put in pre-existing tags and it serves the ones that will provide you with the highest CPMs. Typically, they are seeing lifts in revenue from between 10-30%. In practice this is heavily dependent on the networks you are running and how you are choosing to run them.
21. Rubicon Project – Ad Optimizer
Finally let’s look at the Rubicon Project, another ad optimizer that also acts as an ad provider. Using deals with many major networks, Rubicon will not only serve you ads from your stable of providers but will also pick other providers which might provide you with higher CPMs. From what I’ve seen Rubicon is a great tool, but it’s not for everyone. Reporting can be slow and inaccurate, and depending on the number of networks you are trying to setup it can be difficult to get started. Rubicon also needs several hundred impressions to properly optimize your inventory.

- There are so many different contextual advertising networks that choosing the right one can be a daunting task. However, each contextual advertising network offers different benefits and different models. Different models benefit different kinds of online publishers, so you've got to do your research on the major kinds before you pick one.
Google AdSense is the leader in traditional contextual advertising. Traditional ad networks like Google AdSense offer the basic ads that appear on your website as banners or images next to your content. Another kind of contextual advertising utilizes search engine marketing to match users with advertising they might want to see. Chiticka is the leader in this type of online advertising. The third type of contextual advertising is In Text ads, and Infolinks leads the way in this type of online advertising. In Text ads appear on your website as a double-underlined link that's connected to your keywords.
Although you'll find great benefits from utilizing more than one kind of online advertising, In Text contextual ads have a number of advantages over the other two kinds of advertising. For one, they keep your website neat and tidy because they don't take up any extra space. In Text ads are also quieter because they don't put any noisy images on your website. The lack of extra images also means you avoid any images you don't approve of being placed on your website in the form of an advertisement. You'll also get a higher click-through rate with In Text ads because they're right in the user's field of vision. Many people automatically tune out the content that's next to what they're reading because they know it's advertising space.
In Text contextual ads from Infolinks are also very easy to integrate on your website. The process only takes about a minute once you get your Infolinks account set up. Infolinks also offers its highest revenue share guarantee. It means you're guaranteed to get the highest revenue share in the industry. As the leader in In Text advertising, Infolinks also offers a higher grade of relevancy when matching contextual ads to your website. Several special algorithms work together to earn you the highest payout possible.
Infolinks leads the In Text advertising world with a more intelligent contextual advertising model for publishers everywhere. Infolinks' powerful technology is guaranteed to yield the highest eCPM possible and earn you the most revenue.0

AdSense Alternatives: Contextual Advertising Programs To Make Money Online
Looking for AdSense Alternatives? Here is a reference guide to the most interesting alternative solutions to monetizing your online content with contextual ads.
Add caption
Google AdSense is one of the most popular ways to monetize your blog, but there are times when it is worth considering the alternatives. In some cases you can find that your AdSense account is blocked - especially if Google suspect you of click fraud. However, the unusual circumstances that trigger such accusations are not always under your control, and can come from malicious attacks, genuine misunderstandings or the sudden popularity of one of your blog posts. So what are you going to do if you are left out in the cold?
In maximizing the earning potential of your blog or website it makes sense not to rely too heavily on one single ad-supplier, for a number of reasons. For one, if your account is blocked for whatever reason you could suddenly find your substantial blog income drop down to zero overnight.
In addition to this very real possibility, however, is the fact that AdSense might not be the best fit for your content. Certainly AdSense would seem to perform well under many circumstances, and its popularity is testament to its strengths as a service. But there may well be other ad-serving and monetization options that you can take advantage of to take your earnings to a higher threshold.
There are a great many ad-serving services, and each takes a slightly different approach to the type of advertising content it makes available, the revenue model applied and the degree of control publishers have over the end result. By searching through the alternatives, you might well find that there are services that are better suited to your website than AdSense. Furthermore, you may find that several of these alternatives can be combined effectively, to increase your revenue stream considerably.
In this mini-guide I have gathered together some of the more interesting alternatives for those looking to monetize their blogging efforts with contextual advertising solutions.
Alternative ad-suppliers
- Contextual advertising marketplace: Yahoo! Publisher Network
Yahoo! Publisher Network is a strong Adsense alternative, and would be a good starting place for US-based bloggers looking to replace their AdSense advertising (the service is US only at the time of writing). The overall look of the ads is very similar to those served by Google. Some of the features of YPN include:
- Advanced ad targeting, allowing you to choose two primary categories for your website from a list of over 100
- The ability to filter out competitor's ads, so that they don't appear on your page - you can block up to 50
- Ads are CPC in nature, so that you are paid each time your site visitors click on an ad
- Choice of color size and layout of ads for easy integration into your website
- Tracking on up to 50 channels to see which ads are your best performers
- The minimum payment made is $100
http://publisher.yahoo.com - RSS-feed monetization network: Feedburner Ad Network
Feedburner Ad Network gives those that use the popular Feedburner service to distribute their site feeds the opportunity to add contextual advertising to those feeds. As RSS is an increasingly popular means for people to read blog content, this is an excellent opportunity to make sure that you don't lose out on advertising revenue, even if your readers never visit your website directly. Some of FAN's features are:
- Ads are CPM in nature, so that you are paid per 1000 impressions rather than per click
- Channel-based advertising that determines the nature of the ads served to your feed depending on which Feedburner content category you fall into - e.g. 'Computing and technology'
- The ability to reject ads that you don't like
- Control over how often ads appear in your feed - from every post, to every five posts
- 90 day payment cycle via PayPal, with a minimum amount of $25
- Publishers receive 65% of revenue earned from advertisers
- Detailed performance reports are updated daily

Adsense lifts ban on Adsense alternatives
Where before it was impossible to run Adsense alternatives alongside Adsense advertising, there has been a recent change of heart on the part of Google. It is now possible to do so, as Jennifer Slegg of JenSense notes. Jennifer quotes Google executive Brian Axe, who writes that:
''When it comes to enforcing policies on third-party contextual ads, we'll be following the updated program policies instead of the T&Cs on this point. That is to say, publishers may now display other contextual ads on the same site or page as Google ads as long as they don't have the same look and feel as our ads''

- Contextual advertising marketplace: Yahoo! Publisher Network
- There is no doubt that Google AdSense is the 800-pound gorilla in the room when it comes to contextual ad solutions. The question is, however, what you do when you don’t meet the requirements to use it, get thrown out for some reason or just simply want to try something different? Luckily, there are some other options out there and we’ve gathered up eleven of them to give you some options when it comes to filling up your site’s ad inventory.
AdBrite: AdBrite offers numerous ad styles from the standard contextual ad units, but also offers rich media, inline, full pages and more. The system has one of the lowest thresholds for payment. It defaults to $100 payment, but you can set as low as $5. Payments are issued on a net-60 system, i.e. earnings made in March are paid in May.
AdToll: AdToll is a hybrid ad network that allows you to sell ad space on your site for a price you determine with you keeping 75% of the revenue. If you do not sell a space, the unsold inventory will be filled with “Run of Network” ads which are a cost-per-click solution. Payout minimums are $20 for PayPal and $40 for checks.
BidVertiser: BidVertiser works a bit differently than others in the list in that advertisers bid directly against one another for your ad inventory. The ads look like the general context ads, so they will work with Flash-based sites and sites with very little content. Minimum payout is $10 and can be done by check or PayPal. One other definite plus for them is that they provide actual phone numbers for publishers to call and get assistance when needed.
Chitika: An interesting alternative to most ad solutions as it only shows to your search traffic. Chitika displays ads related to the terms that brought a user to your site and presents them with ads based on that term as well as the option to search more on the term without leaving your page. The ads do not show up to your regular visitors so you don’t have to worry about bombarding your regulars with too much advertising. Payout minimums are $20.
Clicksor: Clicksor provides all of the usual contextual ad sizes you are used to (leaderboards, skyscrapers and so on) as well as providing inline ads, rich media, graphical banners and more. Payment methods vary by style of advertisement, and there is a minimum payout of $50 by standard check or PayPal. There is a minimum of 150,000 page views per month for this program. eTor
eClickZ: eClickZ focuses on search engine sites and some content sites, and they guarantee their advertisers a higher quality of traffic. If your site qualifies, you will be able to talk with an account manager, use a toll free number to call them and take advantage of payout minimums of $50 that can be paid by PayPal.
Infolinks: Infolinks focuses on in-text advertising, but is welcoming to web sites of all sizes and traffic so that there is next to no threshold to joining. Payment threshold is $100 and can be made by PayPal or check.
Kontera: Kontera focuses mainly on inline contextual advertising and offers plugins and one-click support for Blogger, Drupal, Joomla and WordPress. The service has the standard $100 payment threshold, but does offer negotiable CPM rates based on the amount of traffic your site generates. There is a requirement for 500,000 page views to participate in the system.
Microsoft pubCenter: Microsoft’s advertising solution is still considered a beta product, but it is fully functioning and you can control what ads appear on your site by sorting out keywords or URLs. There is a minimum payout of $50.
WidgetBucks: WidgetBucks CPC, CPM are referral options for making money, all of them are displayed in a widget you can place anywhere on your site. Minimum payout is $50 by either PayPal or check.
Yahoo Publisher Network: The Yahoo Publisher Network will give you all of the standard contextual ad sizes and will allow you to filter out competitor’s ads. The payment system provides you with some extra payment options in that you can request payment via PayPal when you hit $50 in revenue and receive it the same day. Same day payment on a $100 minimum for direct deposit or revenue transferred directly to your Yahoo! Search Marketing account. Printed checks take 7 – 10 days to arrive after you request them.

Start Your Online Business in 3 Simple Steps
Starting an online business has both similarities to and striking differences from starting traditional types of businesses. It may or may not require capital, but it does require a sound business plan. There are certainly laws regarding the types of business that can be transacted online, just as surely as there are laws governing business in the real world. But there are also a lot of advantages to doing business online. However, there are few things you should know before you start.
3 Things To Know Before Starting Online Business
Add caption
1. You should first begin by gauging interest in your product, as well as your competition to determine if starting a particular business is worthwhile. You may want to start a news blog that follows celebrities, but do you really think you can compete with Perez Hilton or TMZ? What makes your business special and what will make it stand out to advertisers? Or maybe you want to sell refurbished computers. Can you offer better prices than Best Buy or Dell? These are the things you should consider before you even think about getting your business online. Consider the scope of your market and how you can stand out amongst your peers.
2. If you decide you’re ready to move ahead and get your business online, you must begin by registering a domain name. Much like the legalities of forming a corporation, LLC, or DBA before putting the name on your building, you must have a unique online address in order to do business. Most web hosts offer custom domain registration, so you can kill two birds with one stone.
3. Once you’ve got your domain, you need something to put on it. This means designing a website. There are several decisions you’ll need to make, first and foremost being how much you want to spend. Once you have a budget in mind, determine the function of your site. If it’s a site geared towards news items, you may want the ability to stream live video feeds. If you’re selling physical products (or even virtual ones) you will need a shopping cart and some sort of online payment option, like PayPal, as well as options for shipping. Finally, you’ll want to make sure your site is aesthetically pleasing and encourages viewers to search and or shop your site, as well as offering incentives to return. This is where some marketing experience could be a real help.
Now that you’re business is on the internet, you’ll want to ensure growth, so register with search engines like Google and Bing and consider doing some online marketing or look into SEO to help you get the traffic you need to make your business a success!0

- Most of the bloggers make money using adsense or through any private CPC/CPM networks or via selling ad slots in the sites. There is also another way to make a decent amount from the site. These days you could have noticed links popping out a small ad window when the mouse is rolled over in some sites. This is called as contextual advertising or In-Text advertising and this was the method which I mentioned earlier. In-Text Ads will be displayed based on the keywords preferred by the Advertiser.
It is not a tough job to get register in the networks offering it and it is free as well. Sounds interesting? If you have a site with decent traffic then you can make $3-4/day as an average earning. These earnings may vary depending on the niche as well. If you do not have an adsense account then a private ad publishing network and In-Text Advertising can fetch you good money.
